classes
Lori has an uncanny ability to teach at all levels,
keeping the learner at ease and imparting knowledge. Call Lori to join a
class or attend one of her demonstrations ...
Power Carving a Wolf Head - This class is for the beginning power carver who
owns a rotary tool but who may have never used it to its full potential. Students
will get familiar
with their tool while using it to round the blank, rough shaping the form
of the wolf's head with course aggressive bits, and then fine-tune the shape
with finer bits. Special attention will be given to placement and carving
of the eyes, ears, and the muzzle. Carving of the fur and finishing details
also will be covered.
Beginner - 3-hour class
Power Carving an Eagle Head - This class is for the beginning power carver
who owns a rotary tool but who may never have used it to its full potential.
Students
will use the variety
of bits they have, learning what each is capable of doing in roughing out
the eagle head blank. Shaping the beak and placement and carving of the eyes
will be the main focus of this class. Carving of the head feathers and other
details will be covered.
Beginner - 3-hour class
Power Carving Walking Sticks - The class will cover facial
feature proportions and layout on the stick. Students will concentrate on removal
of the material
around the nose so it protrudes
sufficiently to be shaped and so the eyes are recessed far enough under the
brow for a realistic look. Carving the eye area and the nose end will be
covered in detail, as well as facial hair.
Beginner - 3-hour class
Power Carving a Stylized Bird - The class will concentrate
on rounding the bird blank by looking for and carving the simple shapes that
form the bird's
body—like
spheres, egg shapes, and cone shapes—so it does not have that square
look that a lot of beginning carvings have. Use of a centerline to maintain
symmetry and bit
selection and use are also covered.
Beginner - 3-hour class
Power Carving a Horse Head - Lori will
assist students in becoming more familiar with the potentials of a power
carving tool and in the intricacies of carving
a more complicated
piece—the horse head. Difficult areas, such as the eyes and their placement,
will be covered, as well as looking for key reference points that can be
used in locating other key features that enable a horse head to be proportioned
correctly.
Intermediate - 6-hour class
Power Carving a Miniature Horse - In this 7-session class,
Lori will guide students in carving a whole horse—starting
with the fore and hind legs; then the head, mane, and neck; and finally the
body and tail. Students will then assemble, glue, and blend these carved parts
to complete the horse while concentrating on correct anatomical bone and muscle
structure. Texturing will be covered in the final session. There will be horse
reference materials and homework between sessions.
Intermediate - 7 sessions, 3 hours each
Power Carving a Santa Egg Head - The class will cover facial feature proportions
and layout on a wooden egg. Students will concentrate on removal of the material
around the nose so it
protrudes sufficiently to be shaped and so the eyes are recessed far enough
under the brow for a realistic look. Carving the eye area and the nose end
will be covered in detail, along with styles of beard & mustaches and
expressions.
Beginner & Intermediate - 3-hour class
Wood Burning - Join Lori in using your wood-burning tool
to create the illusion of form, texture, and shades of value on a flat piece
of
wood. This class also
covers surface
preparation, transferring of an image, and completing of an image on wood.
Beginners will practice technique and then burn a cardinal image. Intermediates
will burn an 8" x 10" landscape scene.
Beginner & Intermediate -
4-hour class
Picture Framing - Lori will guide students in designing, measuring, and cutting
the mat board and frame molding to complement their picture or photo. Cutting
of glass
and final assembly will follow. Filling, papering, and wiring will complete
the piece for hanging.
Beginner - 7-hour class
Power Carving a Stylized Feather - Students begin with basic shaping of the
fathers and then add texture details, such as splits and overlays. Woodburning
enhancement of the feathers is demonstrated and discussed. In the second session,
students paint the feathers and attach a pin to the back, if desired. Expect
homework between the two sessions for carving and/or woodburning.
Beginner & Intermediate - 2 sessions, 3 hours each
