The City of Westerville has two reasons to be proud of its Music and Arts
Festival.... First, the festival is a well-respected, juried show, attracting
nearly 200 exhibitors from around the country and an estimated 40,000 visitors.
Second, Westerville is home to four artists whose work has been accepted to
this year's show, including wood sculptor Lorene Andrews.... Lorene is doing
something different now than when she began her art career—she went from
drawing to sculpting.... All of her carving is done with rotary tools; the
main tool she uses is called a foredom. "For the bigger pieces, I use
a chainsaw." The time it takes to complete a piece depends on its size;
contrary to what you might think, smaller pieces take longer. "[They]
have more detail." ...

The Shremshock Gallery, a reception area in the atrium of an architectural
firm downtown, is the setting for "The Chair is Art," an exhibition
coordinated by Gallery 202 in Westerville. When the traveling show began in
the spring, about 100 chairs were displayed in several Westerville sites. The
Shremshock Gallery exhibit is pared down to 12 chairs.... A giraffe's head
and neck protrude from the top of Lori Andrews' wooden, wall-hung chair. The
entire piece, charming in a gift-shop way, is covered with painted brown spots
and appropriately titled "Giraffe." ...

Nothing
is done until it's finished, especially when you are working with wood....
Whether repairing an existing piece of wood or coating a new surface,
the choice of finish is important, said Lori Andrews, a woodworker and a sales
associate at the Woodcraft store in Hilliard. Andrews helps customers
with finishing questions ... [Photo caption: Woodcraft's Lori Andrews offers

Most people may
think of wood carving as a rougly whittled piece of wood. Something done on
a porch or around a campfire and if I thought it it at all, I thought of it
in just that way. But 11 years ago [1988], I happened upon a book that showed
me that woodcarving could be much more. The book was How
to Carve Wildfowl,
by Roger Schroeder. This book interviewed eight world-class duck decoy and
bird carvers on how they achieved the most fantastic carvings I had ever seen.
The photos depicted duck and bird carvings taking flight, defying gravity,
often only supported by wing tip or toe to a slim reed or grass stock. After
reading the book from cover to cover, I discovered that wood had all the working
properties I couldn't find in other sculptural mediums....
